Matadors Pick up Nine Points, Seek Finals on First Day of NCAA Regionals

EUGENE, Ore. - Junior Rolando Felizola finished third in the long jump while teammate DaShalle Andrews took 7th as Cal State Northridge's men picked up six points. For the Matador women, Desirae Gonder earned one point in the high jump on day one of the NCAA West Regionals in Oregon.
Felizola jumped 7.57 while Andrews was seventh with a mark of 7.42. Other event finals on Friday saw Nick Saylor place 17th in the hammer (187-7, 57.18) with teammate Cosy Pearce finishing 21st with a mark of 180-3 (54.94). Derek Cooper finished in the top 20 of the discus as he checked in 18th at 174-3 (53.23). Senior Sean Jones, the Big West runner-up, no-heighted in the pole vault for the second consecutive season.
On the track for the Matador men, freshman Terry Ross and senior Anthony Brown both qualified for the 110 meter hurdles final while the men's 4x100 relay team also reached the final on Saturday. Ross clocked a 13.87 to take third while Brown finished in 14.09 to take the seventh spot in prelims. The 4x100 team placed seventh in qualifying with a time of 40.77.
For the Northridge women, Gonder tallied the lone point on day one taking eighth in the high jump with a height of 5-9.25 (1.76). Gonder tied with five others at 1.76. The Matadors, who qualified three women in the long jump, saw Brittany Ricketts take 13th with a mark of 19-5.25 (5.92). Shelese Ruffin finished 16th at 19-0.75 (5.81) and Big West champion Candyce Babb finished a disappointing 18th at 19-0.50 (.5.80).
In the throws, Stephanie Ralls finished 14th in the javelin with a mark of 141-0 (42.98) while Bobbie Patton was 25th with a distance of 127-0 (38.70). Patton also wound up 16th in the shot put with a mark of 47-3.50 (14.41).
On the track, Deanna Goodwin ran well to reach the final in both the 200 and 400 meters. Goodwin tied for third in the 200 prelims with a time of 23.52 and then placed third in 400 meter qualifying after clocking a time of 53.89. In the hurdles, Ashleigh McGrew finished 12th in the 100 meters (13.89) and did not qualify for the final while Julie Eze was 11th in the 400 meters (1:00.59) and also did not reach the event final.
