NEW ORLEANS, La. - After an impressive showing at the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle last weekend (Feb. 1-2) the Cal State Northridge men's track & field team are ranked 24th this week according to the latest USTFCCCA (U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) Indoor rankings. It marks the first time ever that a Matador men's or women's team has cracked the indoor top 25.
Based on several outstanding performances, including freshman Reindell Cole posting an NCAA Automatic qualifier in the long jump, the Matador men earned 37.00 points in this week's rankings.
Cole outdueled teammate DaShalle Andrews and Washington's five-time All-American Norris Frederick in the long jump by posting the top collegiate mark and fifth best mark in the world this year at 26-1.75 (7.97). Ross ran the third fastest time in Northridge indoor history in the 60 meter hurdles as he won the event in a time of 8.03. Ross placed third in the prelims in a time of 8.16.
In his first action since the 2007 indoor season, senior Justin Johnson made his presence felt with a second place finish in the heptathlon. Johnson scored 5,536 points to Oregon's Ashton Eaton who finished off a record heptathlon performance, scoring 5,859 points, an automatic NCAA entry mark. Johnson won the high jump (6-9.75) and was second in the 60 meters (7.18), 60 hurdles (8.10) and long jump (23-6.25). Teammates Robert Robinson finished sixth with 4,894 points and Owen Morse was ninth with 4,620 points. Morse posted a second place finish in the shot put (41-7.75).

Kenjamine Jackson was ninth in the 60 (6.92) and seventh in the 200 (22.19). Cole also was solid in the high jump as he placed fourth with a height of 6-9 (2.06) while Thomas Johnson was eighth (6-7). In the throws, Cody Pearce finished fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 58-7.50 (17.87) while Alex Butler was eighth in the shot put (51-7.25) followed by Derek Cooper (51.-2.75) in ninth.
