Matadors Solid During Season-Opening Indoor Meet

SEATTLE, Wash. - Freshman Reindell Cole posted an NCAA Automatic qualifier in the long jump and senior Terry Ross also won the 60 meter hurdles as both Cal State Northridge men and women had a solid meet at the indoor season-opening UW Invitational.
Cole outdueled teammate DaShalle Andrews and Washington's five-time All-American Norris Frederick in the long jump by posting the top collegiate mark and fifth best mark in the world this year at 26-1.75 (7.97). Cole's distance ranks second in Northridge indoor history behind Derek Scurry's leap of 26-3.50 in 1993. Rolando Felizola snuck in for third (24-1.50) while Andrews was fourth (23-7.50).
Ross ran the third fastest time in Northridge indoor history in the 60 meter hurdles as he won the event in a time of 8.03. Ross placed third in the prelims in a time of 8.16.
In his first action since the 2007 indoor season, senior Justin Johnson made his presence felt with a second place finish in the heptathlon. Johnson scored 5,536 points to Oregon's Ashton Eaton who finished off a record heptathlon performance, scoring 5,859 points, an automatic NCAA entry mark. Johnson won the high jump (6-9.75) and was second in the 60 meters (7.18), 60 hurdles (8.10) and long jump (23-6.25). Teammates Robert Robinson finished sixth with 4,894 points and Owen Morse was ninth with 4,620 points. Morse posted a second place finish in the shot put (41-7.75).
Also noteworthy for the Matador men on Saturday, Bradley Ike finished sixth in the 60 meters (6.86) and eighth in the 200 (22.29). Kenjamine Jackson was ninth in the 60 (6.92) and seventh in the 200 (22.19). Cole also was solid in the high jump as he placed fourth with a height of 6-9 (2.06) while Thomas Johnson was eighth (6-7). In the throws, Cody Pearce finished fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 58-7.50 (17.87) while Alex Butler was eighth in the shot put (51-7.25) followed by Derek Cooper (51.-2.75) in ninth.
For the Northridge women, Tara Prier was impressive in her first collegiate meet. Prier finished second in the 200 meters (24.79) and third in the 400 (55.60). Precious Watkins also ran well finishing fourth in the 60 meters in a time of 7.62.
The 4x400 relay team of Prier, Sherrina Lofton, Watkins and Desirae Gonder finished third in a time of 3:45.90 which ranks third on the Matador indoor list.
Gonder went on to place second in the high jump with a height of 5-11.50 (1.82). In the throws, Bobbie Patton finished third in the shot put with a mark of 45-11.25 (14.00) and Morgan Bogard was fifth in the weight throw (58-10.75). Lofton placed 12th in the pentathlon with a score of 3,295 points.
