Matador Track & Field Opens 2008 Indoor Season at Washington Invitational
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The 2008 indoor track and field season gets underway this weekend as the Cal State Northridge men and women will compete at the University of Washington Invitational at UW's Dempsey Indoor Facility. Friday's session begins at 3 p.m. and will include multi-even competitions, as well as the distance medley relays and 5000m runs. Saturday's action gets underway at 8:30 a.m. and will run all day.
In addition to the Northridge contingent of 16 men and 15 women, six Top-25 teams plus several large convoys from Pac-10 schools and others will be on hand for this important meet. Also in action this weekend will be the Arkansas women's squad, currently ranked fourth in the USTFCCCA poll, as well as defending NCAA Indoor and Outdoor women's champion Arizona State, now ranked 21st. The 13th-ranked Baylor women, 23rd-ranked Oregon women, 25th-ranked Texas Tech women, and 13th-ranked BYU men will also be in attendance. Stanford, UCLA, and Oregon will all bring large male and female contingents.
Defending NCAA Outdoor long jump champion DaShalle Andrews will square off with Washington senior Norris Frederick in the men's long jump. Andrews also won the 2007 WAC Indoor long jump title. Frederick placed third behind Andrews, despite having outjumped him by more than a foot at Regionals. Frederick is currently tied for the national lead in the long jump after jumping 25' 8 3/4" at the UW Indoor Preview.
Numerous other All-Americans will be in competition throughout the day, as will notables such as Steve Slattery, 2003 U.S. 3k Steeplechase champion and former Husky Mike Sayenko, who placed 29th in the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials in November in just his second career marathon. Both will be running the men's 3000m. Amy Hastings will highlight Friday night's action. The former ASU star smashed the American collegiate 5000m record last year at the Dempsey, and will be back at the scene of the crime Friday night in the 5k race scheduled for 7 p.m.
