Stockton, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's water polo season ended on Sunday afternoon with a 10-6 loss to UC Davis in the third place game at the 2009 Big West Conference Tournament at UOP's Chris Kjeldsen Pool.

The loss gave CSUN a 20-16 season record.

UC Davis got on the scoreboard early. Sophia Patronas scored the first goal of the game 90 seconds after the opening sprint. The Aggies then scored another goal less than a minute later.

UC Davis upped its lead to 3-0, still in the first period. A crucial save from CSUN's goalkeeper Jillian Stapf turned into a transition goal by Kristin McLaughlin for the first Matador goal of the day with 3:11 left in the first period. However, UCD's Lindsay Kiyama responded with her second goal of the period 16 seconds later. UC Davis took a 4-1 lead to end the first period.

The second period started with an offensive surge from the Matadors. Sydney Sonoda started a three-goal rally with a goal coming 89 seconds into the quarter. With 4:35 left in the period, Whitney Delgado narrowed the UC Davis lead to one goal at 4-3. Then McLaughlin netted her second goal of the game to tied the match at 4-4.

The Aggies regained the lad with a goal from Rachelle Smith with 3:05 remaining in the half. Another UC Davis goal found the back of the Matador net to extend the Aggie lead to two goals, 6-4, going into the halftime break.

Defense took center stage in the third period. Only one goal was scored, and that belonged to CSUN's Kirra Kylander with 5:04 left in the period to cut the UC Davis lead to 6-5.

However back came UC Davis with a goal by Kiyama just 25 seconds into the final period. Sixty seconds later, UCD's Kaylee Miller netted her second goal to make it 8-5. UC Davis scored again 40 seconds later to give the Aggies their largest lead of the day, 9-5. Delgado answered for the Matadors to make it 9-6, but the Aggies scored with 3:00 remaining in the match to take a 10-6 lead.

Third-seed UC Irvine won the league tournament title with a 13-9 victory over fourth-seed UC Santa Barbara in the championship game.
