Irvine, Calif. - Dayna Van Gorder and Kirra Kylander each scored two goals, but it wasn't enough as the 15th-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team dropped a 7-5 decision to eighth-ranked UC Irvine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Wednesday night at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
The Matadors took a 1-0 lead with 4:46 left in the first period on a power play goal by Van Gorder. The Anteaters tied the match with 2:02 left in the first period, but Kylander put CSUN back up 2-1 on a power play goal 46 seconds into the second period.
UC Irvine then scored three straight goals to take a 4-2 halftime lead before Van Gorder cut the UCI lead to one goal (4-3) 34 seconds into the third period. At the 5:01 mark of the third period, UCI's Gianna Rossi put UCI back up by two goals at 5-3. Less than a minute later, Kat Plummer put the home team in front, 6-3. Back came CSUN on Chelsea Curran's first goal of the game to make it 6-4 with 3:53 remaining in the third period.
UCI added an insurance goal on a power play goal with 1:44 left in the third period by Jessica Lewis, her second goal of the game to give the Anteaters a 7-4 lead.
The only goal of the fourth period was Kylander's second goal with 22 seconds left.
Jillian Stapf collected 13 saves for the Matadors.
The loss dropped the Matadors to 10-13 overall and 1-6 in the MPSF. UCI is 13-7 overall and 4-4 in league play.
Cal State Northridge returns to action with two home games this weekend. The Matadors host second-ranked Stanford on Friday (4/4/08, 3:00 p.m.) and San Jose State on Saturday (4/5/08, Noon).
