Fobian, Ryan Lead Matadors Over UC Davis 3-1

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior outside hitter Heather Fobian posted 19 kills, including the match-winning shot that capped a 6-0 finishing run in Game four, to lead Cal State Northridge to a 30-27, 24-30, 30-22, 31-29 win over UC Davis in a non-conference match at the Pavilion Saturday.

With the win, the Matadors improve to 12-5 overall, while the Aggies drop to 1-15 on the year.

UC Davis held a 29-25 lead in Game 4, boasting a possibility of sending the match to five games. But senior middle blocker Theresa Lischer knocked down a kill to hold off the game point, then recorded two blocks and a kill to help Northridge enjoy a 6-0 run en route to a victory, preventing a fifth game. Senior Delaney Menell also had a heroic dig during that stretch, aiding in the Matador's 28th point of the game.

Fobian's offense helped Northridge claim the first game. She hit 8-1-9, with her only error coming as a result of a back-row attack violation. The Aggies led 9-6 early in the stanza, but the Matadors went on a 6-0 run to take the lead, helped by three hitting errors by UC Davis.

The Aggies equalized the match with a 30-24 win in Game 2. Middle blocker Jenny Pierce had two kills and a block assist in a span of four points to help stretch UC Davis' lead to 17-11. She totalled four kills on four attempts in the frame, while sophomore outside hitter Nicole Read added a 5-0-11 hitting line in Game 2.

Jen Ryan led all hitters with 25 kills while CSUN libero Jessika Hammerich tallied 29 digs, including 12 in Game 3. Fobian added 16 digs to her offensive numbers.

For UC Davis, Pierce had nine kills in her first 10 attempts to finish with a career-high 12 kills. Read led the Aggie hitters with 16 kills. Mary McClelland patrolled the floor defense with 22 digs, lifting her career total to 1,278 and into second place on the school's career list. She also had four aces for the match.

Cal State Northridge is halfway through its four-match road trip which continues next week (Oct. 22-23) at Long Beach State and UC Irvine.
