Saint Mary's Defeats Northridge To Take Fremont Investment & Loan Title Box Score
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Led by tournament Most Valuable Player Jill Parmele, the Saint Mary’s Gaels claimed the 2003 Fremont Investment & Loan Invitational title with a 38-36, 30-25, 30-20 win over Cal State Northridge Saturday in the Matadome.
With the win, Saint Mary’s improves to 3-0 on the season, while the Matadors’ record stands at 1-1.
Parmele posted a match-high 23 kills while hitting .386 to lead the Gaels, who also got 14 kills from Kaui Salzman. Saint Mary’s hit .264 (62-25-140), including .324 (17-6-34) in game three. Setters Amanda Bible and Lindsay Hardy combined for 54 of the Gaels’ 58 assists in the match.
For the Matadors, Unn Kvendseth and Jen Ryan each had a team-high nine kills. Ryan, who also had a match-high three service aces, hit .389 (9-2-18) to lead the Northridge hitters. Senior Jennifer Fopma added eight kills, nine digs and four blocks for the Matadors, who also received 35 assists, seven digs and three aces from Nadine Nickel.
The Gaels posted a 62-41 advantage in kills as a team, but were out-blocked by the Matadors 8.0 to 5.0. Saint Mary’s held a slight advantage in digs (50-42) and service aces (8-6).
Rounding out the 2003 Fremont Investment & Loan All-Tournament team were: Kristin Ursillo and Larissa Adomat of Northeastern, Kaui Salzman and Cassandra Kolkka of Saint Mary’s and Fopma and Kvendseth of Cal State Northridge.
Cal State Northridge hits the road for its next five matches beginning next Friday, Sept. 6 as the Matadors face Colorado State in the Coors Classic in Fort Collins, Colo.
