Angela Hupp and Siara Grayson each had a team-high six kills but Cal State Northridge was held to an .085 team hitting clip as the Matadors fell 25-19, 25-14, 25-18 to the host Pacific Tigers in a Big West women's volleyball match Friday at the Alex Spanos Center.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 10-14 overall and 9-5 in the Big West while the Matadors drop to 7-21 overall and 1-13 in conference play. Pacific also remained perfect in 10 matches at home.
Grayson and Hupp each had six kills but both struggled as Grayson hit .095 in while Hupp hit just .042. Senior Val Kepler added five kills while hitting .267 and sophomore Lynda Morales chipped in four kills and hit a team-high .286. Kelley Hanson posted a team-high 14 digs while Kayla Wright came off the bench to record 11 assists, seven digs and three kills.
Leading 10-8 in the opening set, Pacific took control with five straight points to build a 15-8 edge. Natalia Tomaszewska led the Pacific charge with two kills and a block assist. Late in the set, the Matadors cut the Tigers' lead to 20-17, but Pacific nabbed the next four and went on to take the set, 25-19. The Pacific defense held Cal State Northridge to a hitting average of .032 in the victory.
The Tigers kept the momentum rolling as the second set as Pacific raced out to an 8-2 early lead. A Kepler kill temporarily pulled the Matadors within five at 15-10 but Pacific pulled away late in the 25-14 win.
It was a similar story in the final set as Pacific bolted to a 12-4 lead following a Shannon Krug kill. The Matadors battled back by scoring eight of the next 12 points to pull within four at 16-12 after a Hupp kill. But an ensuing 4-0 Pacific run put the set out of reach at 20-12 and the Tigers cruised to a 25-18 victory.
Alexa Anderson led the Tigers with a match-high 12 kills (.355) while Tomaszewska and Mallori Gibson each chipped in eight kills.
Cal State Northridge wraps up the road portion of the 2008 season Saturday night at UC Davis. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
