Seniors Kanykey Koichumanova and Canna Furuta, junior Victoria Brymer and freshman Brooke Doane were all named to the 2008 All-Big West Women's Tennis Second Team, the Big West Conference announced Tuesday. Both Koichumanova and Doane and Furuta and Brymer received Second-Team honors for doubles while Koichumanova and Brymer were named to the Second Team for their work in singles.

"To have two doubles teams and two singles players represented on the All-Big West Team is a great accomplishment," head coach Gary Victor said. "I think the honors speak to the depth of our team and our strength in doubles play."

For Koichumanova, the recognition capped off a highly successful playing career at Northridge. She finished 2008 11-9 in singles play and 4-4 in matches against Big West opponents. For her career, Koichumanova finished 56-26 in her four years competing for head coach Gary Victor and was named to the All-Big West Singles First Team and had a 13-match winning streak in 2007. In 2006, Koichumanova earned All-Big West Honorable Mention in singles and earned Honorable Mention as a doubles team with Furuta.

In doubles play, Koichumanova and Doane ran out to a 12-0 record and finished 18-2 overall, playing mostly at the No. 2 position. The record was the second-best mark by a doubles tandem since Victor took over the head coaching duties. The duo was 7-1 in matches against Big West opponents.

In her first season with the Matadors, Brymer finished 4-16 overall, consistently facing the opponent's top competitor in each match. She finished 2-8 against Big West opponents this year. In doubles play, she teamed with Furuta to finish 7-8, all at the No. 1 position. The duo was an impressive 4-2 in matches against Big West opponents.

For Furuta, the conference recognition represents the fourth-straight year the she has been honored by the league coaches. Following her freshman season, she was named to the 2005 All-Big West Second Team after debuting with a 15-1 record, including a 3-1 record at the No. 1 position. In 2006, she earned All-Big West Honorable Mention in singles after finishing the season 11-11 and she and Koichumanova received All-Big West Honorable Mention in doubles. Finally, in 2007, Furuta earned another Honorable Mention in singles and an Honorable Mention for doubles with Koichumanova after the tandem went 7-2.

"It is a great honor see Canna honored four times by the conference and for Kanykey to receive the recognition for three of her seasons," Victor added. "The awards are a great way to cap off a pair of very successful tennis careers at Northridge."

As a squad, the Matadors finished 14-8 this season and 7-3 against Big West opponents. They advanced to the semifinals of the Big West Championships by defeating UC Davis, 4-2, on April 25. However, Northridge lost the next day, 4-0, to second-seeded UC Irvine.
