Matadors Improve to 4-0 with Victory Over Pacific
The No. 67 Cal State Northridge women’s tennis team defeated Pacific, 4-3, in a Big West Conference match Saturday afternoon. After tying in singles play, Northridge won all three doubles matches to take the decisive point in the scoring.
With the victory, the Matadors improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in league play. Pacific falls to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Big West Conference.
The teams traded points in the singles play, which was held first due to inclement weather that forced the match indoors. Junior Victoria Brymer lost her top singles draw against Jolanta Twarowska, 2-6 and 4-6. However, Senior Kanykey Koichumanova won the second singles match, 6-1 and 6-1, over Sveja Arens.
In the other singles action, Olga Gumenyuk def. Sandra Kukla, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4 in the third match while senior Canna Furuta won the fourth spot, 7-5, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6). In the fifth match, Kateryna Nezhura defeated Nina Jaworowski, 5-7, 7-6 (6) and 7-6 (6), but sophomore Kristy Fournell defeated Sasha Fisher, 7-5 and 6-3, in the final singles match.
The Matadors dropped only eight games in the three doubles matches. Brymer and Furuta won the No. 1 match, 8-4, over Twarowska and Gumenyuk. In the second spot, Koichumanova and sophomore Brooke Doane defeated Fisher and Arens, 8-2. Finally, Kukla and Jaworowski defeated Nezhura and Clara Schumacher, 8-2.
Northridge plays again Sunday, taking on UC Davis in a conference match in Davis.
