Matadors Ace Season-Opening Test to Defeat Fullerton, 6-1

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women’s tennis team opened its 2008 season with a flurry, defeating Cal St. Fullerton, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon. Several Matadors registered impressive performances in the match, including senior Canna Furuta, who won her singles match, 6-1 and 6-0, and teamed with junior Victoria Brymer to win their doubles match, 8-5.
Furuta defeated the Titans’ Karina Akhmedova in the No. 4 singles match and she and Brymer defeated the Fullerton pair of Shelly Injejikian and Karina Akhmedova in the No. 1 doubles match. Furuta finished the 2007 season with a 13-5 record in singles play, earning Big West Honorable Mention honors. In her Northridge debut, Brymer, a transfer from Washington, also won her singles event, defeating Erin Wiesener, 6-4 and 6-1, in the No. 2 singles match.
The Matadors swept the doubles portion of the match, as senior Kanykey Koichumanova and freshman Brooke Doane defeated Jerusha Cruz and Brandy Andrews, 8-2, in the No. 2 doubles match while the tandem of junior Sandra Kukla and freshman Nina Jaworowski, both of whom were making their Northridge debuts, overpowered the Titans’ Erin Wiesener and Kathleen Doran, 8-0.
In other singles action, Kukla bested Jerusha Cruz, 6-1 and 6-2, in the No. 3 singles match while Jaworowski defeated Brandy Andrews, 6-0 and 6-0. In the No. 6 singles match, sophomore Kristy Fournell blasted Lani Agsalud, 6-0 and 6-0. The only Matador to fall Wednesday was Koichumanova, who lost her No. 1 singles match, 4-6 and 2-6, to Injejikian.
Northridge returns to the court on Feb. 13 for its first home match of the season, hosting UC San Diego at the Matador Tennis Complex at 2 p.m.
