The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (14-8) lost to UC Irvine, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at the Big West Championships. The Anteaters won all five matches that were completed, ending the Matadors' season.
In doubles play, UC Irvine's Calre Fermin and Rebecca Kwan defeated juniors Victoria Brymer and Sandra Kukla, 8-4, in the No. 2 match and Ali Borowicz and Jessica Broadfoot defeated senior Canna Furuta and sophomore Kristy Fournell, 8-4, in the No. 3 draw.
Senior Kanykey Koichumanova and freshman Brooke Doane's match against Inna Agababian and Becky Bernhard was not completed.
The Anteaters then took the first three singles matches to clinch the victory. Bernhard defeated Brymer, 6-1 and 6-1, in the No. 1 draw. Broadfoot then finished off a 6-2, 6-3 victory over freshman Nina Jaworowski in the No. 6 position. Finally, Kwan won her No. 6 match over Doane in three sets, 6-1, 3-6 and 7-5.
The match represents the final one for seniors Kanykey Koichumanova and Canna Furuta. The pair were All-Big West First Team selections in 2007. Head Coach Gary Victor and the squad ended up 14-8 overall and 7-3 in matches against Big West opponents.
