Matador Tennis Defeats UC Davis, 4-2; Advances to Face UC Irvine in Semifinals at Big West Championships

The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (14-7) defeated UC Davis, 4-2, Friday afternoon in the quaterfinals of the Big West Championships at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens. The Matadors took the doubles point while Kanykey Koichumanova, Brooke Doane and Nina Jaworowski all picked up singles wins.

Northridge opened the match against the Aggies by claiming the first two doubles matches completed and taking the point. Koichumanova and Doane, who finished the season 17-2 as a pair, defeated Randi Schuler and Herzyl Legaspi, 8-3, in the No. 1 draw.

Senior Canna Furuta and Jaworowski then finished off an 8-5 victory over Emma Shapiro and Robin Guier in the No. 3 match. The second position, a battle between Northridge's Sandra Kukla and Victoria Brymer against UC Davis' Anita Athavale and Desiree Stone, did not finish.

In singles, Doane and Koichumanova were the first to finish, extenind Northridge's lead to 3-0. Doane won her No. 5 draw in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0, over Shapiro. Koichumanova then fended off Stone, 6-2 and 7-5, in the No. 2 draw.

UC Davis picked up the next two winners, drawing within one point. Brymer lost her top-seeded match to Schuler, 6-3 and 7-6, while Furuta fell to Guier, 7-5 and 6-4, in the No. 3 draw.

However, Jaworowski rallied after dropping the second set to overpower Kaitlan Callan, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-0, to give Northridge the victory. The victory was Jaworowski's 12th of the season in singles play.

The Matadors will now face second-seeded UC Irvine at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
