NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team won its third-straight match Tuesday, defeating Fresno Pacific, 4-3, at the Matador Tennis Complex. Senior Kanykey Koichumanova, junior Sandra Kukla and freshmen Brooke Doane and Nina Jaworowski all picked up singles wins in defeating the Sunbirds.

Fresno Pacific entered the match ranked No. 2 in NAIA and fresh off a 9-0 victory over Hope International to capture the GSAC Championship. However, under the guidance of head coach Gary Victor, the Matadors rallied to the victory.

Heading into singles action, Northridge trailed 1-0 after the Sunbirds won two of the three matches. Anna Karavayeva and Maria Klokotzky slipped past Kanykey Koichumanova and Brooke Doane, 9-7, in the No. 1 match, while Katia Sabate and Amandine Ferot defeated Victoria Brymer and Kristy Fournell, 8-5, in the No. 2 match.

In the No. 3 match, senior Canna Furuta and freshman Nina Jaworowski won their doubles match, 8-2, over Angelina Minova and Brittany Salley.

However, the singles matches would propel the Matadors to victory, spurred by a sweep of the lower half of the bracket. Kukla rallied from a first-set tiebreaker win to take the No. 4 match, 7-6 (5), 6-1, over Klokotzky to give the Matadors the decisive point. In the fifth spot, Doane defeated Ferot in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, while Jaworowski blanked Ferot, 6-0, 6-0, in the sixth spot.

At the top of the bracket, Minova defeated Brymer, 6-1, 6-3, and Sabate outlasted Furuta, 6-7 (6), 7-5 and 10-1, in the No. 3 match. However, at the second spot, Koichumanova defeated Karavayeva, 6-3, 6-3, to give Northridge another singles victory.

The Matadors have only Cal State Bakersfield left on the schedule, hosting the Roadrunners on April 19 at the Matador Tennis Complex. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
