Northridge Storms Past Yale, 5-2

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The No. 75 Cal State Northridge women's tennis team improved to 9-2 on the season with a 5-2 victory over the Yale Bulldogs at the Matador Tennis Complex. Freshman Nina Jaworowski ran her winning streak to six matches, defeating Silla DiFillippis 6-1 and 6-1 in the No. 6 singles match.

Another rookie, Brooke Doane, also has an impressive stretch going, having won six of her last seven matches after defeating Yale's Lilian Nguyen, 6-3 and 6-1, in the No. 5 singles match. Doane now stands at 7-2 on the season while Jaworowski has a team-high eight singles victories.

The freshman also teamed with senior Kanykey Koichumanova to remain undefeated in doubles play. The tandem got the best of Steyi Petrelli and Janet Kim, 8-5, in their No. 2 doubles match. Their record has now reached an impressive 10-0 in doubles play.

Also picking up victories for the Matadors in singles action was junior Sandra Kukla and Koichumanova. Kukla improved to 7-2 on the season, having won her No. 4 singles contest, 6-3 and 6-4, over Petrelli. Koichumanova won her No. 2 singles contest and improved to 6-5 on the season, powering past Jessica Rhee, 6-4 and 6-1.

Senior Canna Furuta and junior Victoria Brymer both fell in singles. Furuta lost the third singles match, 6-1 and 6-1, to Lindsay Clark, while Brymer lost the top draw, 6-4 and 6-1, to Kim.

In doubles play, the Matadors earned the point, winning two of three matches. Brymer and Furuta fell, 8-6, to Clark and Rhee in the top draw. The pair is 6-3 in doubles this season.

 

 

However, Kukla and Jaworowski won their third doubles match in a decisive 17th game, 9-8 (4), over Lindsay Dashiell and Lilian Nguyen. The pair is now 7-2 on the season.

The Matadors return to action on with a match on Wednesday against the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. from the Matador Tennis Complex.
