SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 75 Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (8-2, 5-0 BWC) defeated UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, in a Big West match Saturday afternoon in Santa Barbara. In addition to winning the doubles' point, Northridge senior Canna Furuta, junior Sandra Kukla and freshmen Brooke Doane and Nina Jaworowski all wracked up singles victories.
In doubles action, the tandem of Doane and senior Kanykey Koichumanova remained undefeated on the season, defeating Asagi Onaga amd Jill Damion, 8-5, in the No. 2 match. In the No. 1 contest, junior Victoria Brymer and Furuta defeated Marta Simic and Charlotte Scatliffe, 9-7.
Koichumanova and Doane's point proved the winner as junior Sandra Kukla and Jaworowski fell to Tova Hausman and Brittany Kausen, 8-4, in the No. 3 match. The pair now stands at 9-0 on the year while Brymer and Furuta moved to 6-2 and Jaworowski and Kukla fell to 6-2. As a team, CSUN is 20-6 overall in doubles play.
In singles play, Kukla and Doane were the first to finish, picking up victories in the fourth and fifth position, respectively. Kukla downed Onaga, 6-1 and 6-3, while Foane defeated Hausman, 6-4 and 6-3.
Furuta then finished off a 7-6 and 7-6, victory over Scatcliffe in the No. 3 singles match to win the match for the Matadors. With the victories, Furuta now stands at 6-3 on the season, Kukla is 6-2 and Doane also checks in at 6-2 in singles competition.
Jaworowski also picked up win number seven on the season, raising her record to 7-2 with a Kausen in the No. 6 match, 6-3 and 6-3.
Falling to the Guachos for Northridge were Brymer, who fell to Simic, 6-1 and 7-6 in the top draw, and Koichumanova, who lost 6-3, 4-6 and 6-3 to Damion.Brymer is 3-6 on the season while Koichumanova now stands at 5-5.
Next up for Northridge is a meeting with Yale on St. Partick's Day, Monday, Mar. 17. The match at the Matador Tennis Complex is set to begin at 2 p.m.
