No. 75 Matadors Dispatch of Texas State, 6-1

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (7-2, 4-0 BWC) defeated Texas State, 6-1, at the Matador Tennis Complex Wednesday afternoon. The doubles tandem of senior Kanykey Koichumanova and freshman Brooke Doane remain undefeated on the season, winning their match, 8-2, over Ashley Ellis and Lainy Chafitz.

The Matadors won the doubles point over Texas State, sweeping the other two matches in addition to Koicumanova and Doane's. The No. 1 team of senior Canna Furuta and Victoria Brymer defeated Andrea Giraldo and Ali Gulida, 8-2. In the third match, freshman Nina Jaworowski and Sandra Kukla got the best of Sumarie Muller and Natalie McLeod, 8-1.

Brymer and Furuta moved to 5-2 with the victory while Jaworowski and Kukla improved to 6-1. As a team, CSUN stands at 18-5 overall in doubles play.

In singles play, Brymer and Koichumanova secured the top two singles' points in the match as -Brymer defeated Giraldo, 7-6 (3) and 7-5, while Koichumanova blasted Chafitz, 6-2 and 6-1.The victory snapped a five-match losing streak for Brymer, who moved to 3-5 in singles play. Koichumanova improved to 5-4 with the victory.

Despite dropping the first set, 6-2, Kukla rallied in the second frame of her No. 3 singles match against Gulida to win the set, 6-0. However, Galida would grab the point, Texas State's only one of the day, winning the third set, 10-4. Kukla's record now stands at 5-2 in singles play.

In the No. 4 match, Furuta easily handled Jennifer Nowland, 6-4 and 6-0. Jaworowski rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Mackenzie Farmer, 6-7 (3), 6-1 and 10-1. Finally, Doane grabbed Northridge's sixth point of the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over McLeod in the No. 6 match.

 

 

Furuta now stands at 5-3 on the season, Jaworowski is 6-2 and Doane checks in at 5-2 in singles competition.

Freshman Whitney Paluch and sophomore Ashley Macias were also victorious for the Matadors, winning their No. 7 and No. 8 matches.

The Matadors return to Big West action on Mar. 15 when they head up the coast to face the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara. First serve on Saturday is slated for noon.
