NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The No. 73 Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (6-2) returned to its winning ways Wednesday night at the Matador Tennis Complex, defeating Georgia State, 4-3. The Matadors won the doubles' point in a pair of thrilling matches that went to a decisive 17th game.
In the No.1 doubles match, the tandem of junior Victoria Brymer and senior Canna Furuta won, 9-8 (7-5), over Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova. In the second doubles' contest, senior Kanykey Koichumanova and freshman Brooke Doane edged Dariana Kozmina and Kiara Powell, 9-8 (7-3), to give the Matadors the point.
In the third match-up, junior Sandra Kukla and freshman Nina Jaworowski defeated Rachel Malina and Mateja Podgorsek, 8-2.
In singles' action, Georgia State took the top two matches. Nitkova defeated Brymer, 7-6 and 6-2. Then, Koichumanova fell to Kozmina, 3-6, 6-2 and 10-8. However, Furuta won the third match over Malina, 6-1 and 6-1.
In the second half of the singles' bracket, Kukla returned from a two-match absence to blast Gresova, 6-1 and 6-2. However, Doane lost to Powell, 3-6, 6-2 and 10-8 in the fifth match. Finally, freshman Nina Jaworowski handled Kiera Strickland, 6-1 and 6-0.
The Matadors return to action in one week, playing Texas State at the Matador Tennis Complex on Mar. 12. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
