NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team lost 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex to Furman University. Freshman Nina Jaworowski and Brooke Doane recorded the Matadors' two points in their first loss of the season.
In doubles play, CSUN's top tandem, junior Victoria Brymer and senior Canna Furuta lost, 8-4, to Furman's Laura Gioia and Natasa Manojlovic. However, senior Kanykey Koichumanova and freshman Brooke Doane won their No. 2 doubles match, 8-5, over Monica Arguello and Lauren Osborne. Finally, to decide the doubles' point, Lauren Tomroy and Jessica Preeg defeated Nina Jaworowski and Sandra Kukla, 8-1.
In singles play, Brymer fell to Gioia, 6-2 and 6-0, while Koichumanova battled in the second singles match, but ultimatey fell, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-4, to Arguello. In the third position, Furuta also lost, falling 6-3 in two sets to Osborne.
Jaworowski and Doane would score for Northridge in the second set of singles matches. Pree defeated Fournell, 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3 to win the fourth match while Doane won 6-3 and 6-3 in the sixth spot over Manojlovic. However, Jaworowski lost 2-6, 6-2 and 6-4 to Tomroy in the fifth spot.
The Matadors fall to 5-1 on the season while Furman improves to 6-4.
Northridge will have little time to think about Saturday's contest as a match with the Rice Owls awaits them Sunday afternoon. Start time is slated at 11 a.m.
