NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - After traveling to San Luis Obispo early this morning to compete in the Third Annual Mustang Invitational, a one-day meet hosted by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, both Matador swimming teams earned enough points to finish in second place behind the host Mustangs.

Junior Olesya Senicheva led the way for the women, as her overall total of 54 points was the highest mark of any Matador female swimmer, tying her with Clark Henson on the men's side for the highest individual total of the day.

After finishing in third place in the 200 Medley Relay with teammates Mikey Eustance, Simone Luker, and Bethany Scamara, Senicheva posted a 59.62 in the 100 Butterfly, a time that was fast enough for first place in the event.

Junior Shannon Colavito and senior Luker also posted times good enough to collect 44 and 43 points respectively during the day-long competition.

Colavito finished in fourth place in both the 200 Freestyle posting a time of 2:04.41 and the 1650 Freestyle with a time of 18:53.16, just over one second behind the eventual third-place winner.

In addition to her third-place performance in the 200 Medley Relay, Luker also finished with the third fastest time in the 200 Breaststroke with a performance of 2:29.27.

On the men's side, the day began on a strong note as Hank Weinberger, Henson, Travis Hyden, and Chris Grafton swam a collective 1:39.20, and finished in second place in the first men's race of the afternoon, the 200 Medley Relay.

Senior Matt Sulkevich followed up his teammates performance in the very next race, and swam a 17:42.22 in the 1650 Freestyle for a third-place finish in the event.

Just a handful of minutes later, Henson became the first Matador of the day to win an individual race with a time of 58.85 in the 100 Breaststroke, the first of a number of top times for the Matadors in the meet.

But it was Grafton who turned in the best individual performance of the day for either team, and he finished in first place in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle events, posting times of 21.71 and 47.79 respectively.

As the day progressed, the men continued to post competetive times as Jummy Rogers finished in second place in the 200 Backstroke with a time 2:00.97, followed by Henson's second place performance in the 200 Breaststroke (2:10.67), another third-place finish by Sulkevich in the 500 Freestyle (4:55.82), another second-place performance by Henson in the 200 IM (2:01.56), culminating in another first-place finish by Grafton, Chris Ardoin, Emre Bulbul, and Weinberger in the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:27.02).

Both Men's and Women's Swimming teams now have almost a month to prepare for their next competition, the Irvine Invitational, taking place January 3-4, 2009, on the campus of UC Irvine.

Olesya Senicheva was one of a number of Matador swimmers who finished in first place in their individual event, as she posted the fastest time in the 100 Butterfly.
