Amanda Peek Named Big West Player of the Week

April 21, 2008

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge junior Amanda Peek was named the Big West Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. In the three games against Cal Poly, Peek finished with a 1.000 batting average, a 1.000 on-base percentage and a 3.000 slugging percentage.

Although she recorded only two official at-bats against the Mustangs, Peek made both count, blasting a double and a home run in the Matadors' 8-7 victory in game one. In the game, she finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored, two RBIs and two walks. Her home run in the top of the seventh gave Northridge the winning runs in the game.

In the next two games, the Mustangs avoided Peek's prowess, walking the slugger in all seven of her plate appearances, including four intentional free passes in game three. She scored an additional run in game two to give her three for the weekend.

For the season, Peek is hitting .427, which leads the team and is second in the Big West Conference. She leads the league in on-base percentage, reaching safely at a .570 clip. She is also tops on the team in hits (41), runs scored (23), RBIs (23), home runs (5) and total bases (67). Her 32 walks is also tops amongst Big West competitors.

Long Beach State's Jennifer Griffin was also named Big West Player of the Week, while Cal State Fullerton's Christine Hiner received Big West Pitcher of the Week honors. Peek becomes the second Matador in as many weeks to receive the award, following Alexandria Alvarado's award on April 14.

The Matadors now await a pivotal three-game Big West series against Cal State Fullerton. The Titans and CSUN are tied for third in the conference at 6-6. The teams will play a pair of games on Saturday and then play the finale on Sunday. All three games will take place at Matador Diamond with both days starting at noon.
