SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (16-28, 4-8 Big West) lost 4-2 to UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference series at Campus Diamond. The Matadors could not rally from an early deficit despite RBIs from Jaci Carlsen and Madeline Sale.

The Gauchos struck first Sunday, scoring a run on consecutive two-out doubles in the second. In the third, UCSB started the inning with a triple and a walk and both runners came around to score on a two-run double.

That early offense chased CSUN starter Hannah Fraijo from the circle. She lasted 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs with one strikeout. Fraijo also took the loss for CSUN, dropping to 10-11 on the season.

Northridge got on the board in the fourth thanks to a two-out rally. Samantha Sloniker and Tracy Allen both reached on an error and Sale picked up her fifth RBI of the weekend with a bloop single into left field.

CSUN got another run back in the top of the fourth. Karla Chaparro went to second on an error and, with two down, scored on an RBI double by Carlsen.

The Gauchos added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a lead-off home run off Mia Pagano. Despite the run, Pagano was effective in relief for the Matadors. She went 3.2 innings, allowing just that one hit with one strikeout.

Despite a single by Jessica Fridwall, CSUN went quietly in the seventh. Krista Cobb tossed her second complete game of the weekend to earn the win for UC Santa Barbara.

Northridge returns to the friendly confines of Matador Diamond for a three-game Big West series against Cal Poly next weekend. The Matadors and Gauchos will play a doubleheader on April 30 and a single game on May 1 with both days starting at noon.

Jaci Carlsen hit her team-leading ninth double of the season Saturday.
