Game Two Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (16-27, 4-7 Big West) split a doubleheader with UC Santa Barbara Friday afternoon at Campus Diamond. After suffering a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in eight innings in the first game, the Matadors responded by posting a 9-2 victory in the second game.

At the plate, senior Kristen Mihm had an outstanding day, finishing 4-of-5 for the day with four RBIs, two runs scored, two sac bunts and a home run. Madeline Sale also had a nice day at the dish, finishing with four RBIs and four hits in the two games, including a carer-high three RBIs in game one.

In the circle, Hannah Fraijo rebounded from a loss in the first game to toss a complete game in the Matadors' game two victory. She is now 10-10 with a 4.99 ERA on the season.

Game One Recap

In game one of the doubleheader, CSUN could not hold onto leads in the seventh and eighth innings and lost 5-4 to the Gauchos.

Trailing 2-1, CSUN tied the game on an RBI single by Madeline Sale in the top of the fifth. Sale finished the game 3-for-4 with a career-high three RBIs. The three-hit performance was Sale's third of the season.

In the seventh, Tracy Allen and Sale pieced together back-to-back doubles to give CSUN a 3-2 lead. However, UCSB would answer with a two-out RBI single to send the game into extra frames.

In the eighth, Karla Chaparro led off the frame with her first career triple and quickly scored on an RBI single by Kristen Mihm.

Again, the lead would be short lived. UC Santa Barbara hit a home run to start the eighth and put the winning run on base in the next at-bat with a hit batter. After a strikeout, the Gauchos scored the winning run with an RBI double to left-center.

Hannah Fraijo took the loss for CSUN, falling to 9-10 on the season. She tossed 0.2 innings of work, allowing the game-winning hit.

Krista Cobb went the distance for the Gauchos to earn the win.

Game Two Recap

Northridge quickly put the disappointment of the extra-inning game one loss behind them as they rolled to a 9-2 victory in game two.

After UCSB scored a run in the bottom of the first, CSUN answered with six runs in the top of the third. Mihm started the frame with an infield single and then moved to third after Jaci Carlen's sac bunt resulted in an error by the Gauchos. Carlsen quickly stole second and junior Samantha Sloniker broke out of her slump in a big way with a two-run double.

With Sloniker on second, Mikayla Thielges doubled to center field to increase CSUN's lead to 3-1. Tracy Allen and Madeline Sale then strung together consecutive singles to make it 4-1 Northridge.

Following a fielder's choice, Jessica Fridwall roped a single up the middle to score Allen. The Matadors' final run of the frame would come around to score on a sac fly by Karla Chaparro.

Mihm added three more runs to the Matadors' half of the scoreboard with a towering three-run home run in the top of the fifth. The deep fly was her third of the season and set a new career high.

The Gauchos would add one run in the bottom of the fifth to end the game's scoring.

Korinne Randazzo had two hits, including her third double of the season, and scored two runs in the CSUN victory.

In the circle, Fraijo scattered eight hits to go along with the two earned runs and had one walk and one strikeout. Andriana Collins took the loss for Gauchos.

The Matadors and Gauchos will play a single game on Saturday at noon at Campus Diamond. Next week, CSUN hosts Cal Poly in a three-game series at Matador Diamond.
