STOCKTON, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge softball team (13-16, 2-1 BWC), lost to Pacific, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field. Sophomore Alexandria Alvarado and junior Amanda Peek each picked up RBIs for the Matadors.
Senior Mercedes Lovato made the start for Northridge and picked up the loss. She now stands at 11-10 for the season with a 3.16 ERA and 107 strikeouts.
Pacific picked up a pair of runs in the first. The Matadors quickly responded in the second when sophomore Alexandria Alvarado slapped a two-out double to bring fellow sophomore Jaclyn Rymer to the plate.
The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the third following their second sac fly of the game. After Pacific put runners on first and third with one out in the fourth, sophomore Amanda Pitzenberger came in to relieve Lovato. The next Tiger batter then slapped a single to center to make the score 4-1 in Pacific's favor.
Northridge got a run back in the top of the sixth after senior Jackie Duree led off the inning with a bunt single. After moving to second on a passed ball, Duree came into score on an RBI groundout by junior Amanda Peek.
The Tigers added another two runs in the sixth with a two-out, two-run triple. The Matadors threatened in the seventh, getting junior Micah Putnam and Alvarado on board with no outs to start the inning. However, the next three batters were retired in order to quell the rally.
CSUN welcomes the 49ers of Long Beach State to Matador Diamond for its Big West home opener next weekend. On Apr. 5, the teams will play a doubleheader scheduled for a noon start time and will play the final game of the series on Apr. 6, a single game also starting at noon.
