LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (4-5) lost twice Saturday at the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. Northridge dropped an 11-0 decision to No. 23 BYU and then fell 9-1 in five innings to Utah State.

On a frigid day in Sin City, the Matadors struggled at the plate. They finished with five hits in 12 innings of play. Jaci Carlsen scored their only run, cranking her first home run of the season in the loss to Utah State. She also had a stolen base in the BYU game.

In the circle, Carly Wade took the loss in both games for the Matadors. As a pitching staff, CSUN issued 24 hits and 16 walks in 12 innings of action.

In the first game of the day, CSUN mounted little threat to the No. 23 BYU Cougars, falling 11-0.

The Matadors managed just three hits off BYU over seven innings. Freshman Madeline Sale picked up two of those while Tracy Allen had the third. Jaci Carlsen drew a walk and stole a base as well.

In the circle, Wade kept CSUN in the game for five innings. She scattered six hits and walked seven but allowed only two earned runs. She also got out of bases-loaded jams in the first and third inning.

In the sixth, Ashley Aratow started the frame for CSUN but allowed the two hits and a walk and was quickly replaced by Hannah Fraijo. She promptly allowed a grand slam and the Cougars scored five more times in the seventh.

The second game was not much kinder to the Matadors, who fell 9-1 to Utah State in five innings. CSUN mustered two hits at the plate in five innings, including Carlsen's first home run of the season.

The Aggies' Shelbi Tyteca held the Matadors to just four baserunners over five innings to earn the win. Samantha Sloniker had a single and drew a walk. Kara Chaparro drew the other free pass for Northridge.

In the circle, Wade started for the second time on the day and took the loss. She went 3.2 innings allowing seven hits, three walks and six earned runs. Leann Lopez also saw some time in the circle for CSUN.

Northridge closes out its time in Las Vegas Sunday with a meeting against No. 9 Hawai'i. The Matadors and Rainbow Wahine are slated for an 11:15 a.m. first pitch on Feb. 20.
