NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Sophomore Farryn Townley put CSUN ahead in the 81st minute, connecting on a one-timer from senior Tryna Tafoya to give the Cal Sate Northridge women's soccer team (5-1-0) a 2-1 win over Saint Mary's Sunday at the Saint Mary's Fall Classic. Earlier in the contest, freshman Nancy Avesyan scored her first career goal as the Matadors defeated the host Gaels.

The goal marked Townley's third of the year and all of her tallies have stood as game winners this season. She now has five goals for her career. The assist was Tafoya's second of the season, giving her 11 for her career and moving her into a tie with Riyah Gough for second in school history.

The Matadors wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Senior Kristal Phillips found Avesyan, who chipped in her first career goal from 14 yards over the Saint Mary's keeper in the fifth minute of action. The helper was Phillips' second of the year and ninth of her career, moving her into a five-way tie for sixth in school history.

Saint Mary's responded in the 68th minute of action, leveling the score on a 30-yard blast by Stefani Rocco. Tara Farrell picked up an assist on the play.

Following Townley's goal, Phillips went into the books with her second yellow card of the match in the 81st minute and was subsequently sent off by the referee. Fellow senior Nalena Betancourt also saw the yellow card, going into the books in the 83rd minute.

Sophomore Leah Elliott picked up the win in net for CSUN, making seven saves in the match. She now stands at 5-1-0 on the season with a 0.96 goals-against-average and an .800 save percentage.

CSUN finished the match with 13 shots, eight of which were on goal, compared to 20 shots, nine on goal, for Saint Mary's. The Gaels also held a sizable advantage in fouls, 16-13, in the match.

For their efforts over the weekend, Avesyan, Elliott and sophomore Jasmine Pratt were named to the all-tournament team.

Northridge continues its roadtrip next week, with a pair of matches in the Grand Canyon State. First up is a meeting with Arizona State on Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m., followed by a contest at Arizona on Sept. 21 at 2 p.m.
