Keith West starts his third year as the head coach of the Northridge women's soccer team in 2008.
In 2007, West's Matadors finished 5-10-3 overall, but 3-1-2 over their last six games and 2-4-2 againt Big West Conference opponents, including a 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara. The victory over the Gauchos was CSUN's first since 2001. Following the season, seniors Susie Mischenko and Kristy Krohn earned All-Big West honors, with Mischenko receiving All-Big West First Team recognition for the second-consecutive season.
In his first season as the head coach, West guided the Matadors to a 10-9-0 overall record and a fifth-place finish in the Big West Conference in 2006. West had two players receive All-Big West honors, as Susie Mischenko earned first team accolades and Sara Davis was named honorable mention.
West was named head coach on Mar. 14, 2006, becoming the fifth head coach in the history of the program. West previously worked with the women's team for two years as an assistant under Terry Davila and helped guide the Matadors to a pair of double-digit win totals.
In 2004, Northridge equaled school records in wins (12) and conference victories (6) in earning its first trip to the Big West Tournament. In 2005, the Matadors posted an 11-8-0 record, setting a school mark with a nine-match win streak in tying for fourth in one of the toughest conference's in the nation.
West has been a part of the Cal State Northridge soccer coaching staff since 1999 when he was an assistant on the men's team. His coaching days began in 1996 when he served as a graduated assistant on coach Marwan Ass'ad's staff.
As the men's defensive coach for seven seasons, West helped the Matadors to four straight trips (2002-05) to the NCAA Division I Tournament thanks to a defense that has been ranked as one of the nation's toughest. Northridge finished with a goals against average of 0.88 and posted 11 shutouts in 2005. Three Matador defenders earned All-Big West Conference honors, with Sean Franklin earning first-team honors, Matt Tracy receiving second-team accolades and Derek Hanks being named to the honorable mention team. A total of 10 Northridge defenders were named all-conference from 2002-05, including back-to-back Big West Defensive Player of the Year Edwin Miranda.
West spent seven years as the assistant coach of Harvard-Westlake High School's varsity girls' soccer team. In addition, he served as the head coach of the boys' Valley United Soccer Club for four years and the girls' Valley United Soccer Club for one season. Recently, West led the Real So Cal U-14 Girls Team to a State Championship in 2008. He also previously coached the West Valley Samba squad that won the Dallas Cup tournament in 2002.
Much of West's success as a coach comes from lessons learned on the field as a three-year letterman with the Matadors from 1993-95. He led the western region and finished third in the nation in scoring as a senior after collecting an amazing 20 goals and 49 total points. In addition to his Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year award, West garnered second team All-Far West Region honors in 1995. Recently, West was named to the MPSF 15th Anniversary Team.
As a high school athlete at Kennedy High School, West accumulated many accolades, including his selection as City Player of the Year after his junior season.
West, who graduated from CSUN in the spring of 2003 with a bachelor's degree in Finance/Real Estate, currently resides in Granada Hills.
