Gillenwater Leads Matadors to Fifth Place Finish at Aztec Invitational

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Junior Krystina Gillenwater fired a one under-par 71 to move the Cal State Northridge women's golf team up two spots to a fifth-place finish at the Aztec Fall Classic at Salt Creek G.C.
Gillenwater, who was tied for seventh at two over-par 74 after Monday's opening round, tied for the best round of the day on Tuesday to jump five spots into sole possession of second. She finished the tournament as runner-up to individual champion Patty Chawalitmetha (-2, 142) of UC Irvine by carding a two-round one over-par 145.
Junior Stephanie Aston moved up into a tie for 31st after a final-round +2, 74 left her at +10, 154 for the tournament. Senior Eva Yoe, who was tied for seventh with Gillenwater after one round, slippped into a tie for 33rd after a final round 81 left her at +11, 155. Senior Lucy Davies dropped from 39th to 54th after a final-round 81 left her at +15, 159 and Monique Huijsman struggled for the second straight round as she followed up Monday's 86 with an 87 on Tuesday to finish 99th at +29, 173.
Competing individually for the Matadors, Ashlee Nagamine carded rounds of 82-79 to finish tied for 60th at +17, 161, Katrina Sutton (88-79) posted a nine-stroke improvement from Monday to finish tied for for 84th at +23, 167 and Julie Cho tied for 90th at +24, 168 after rounds of 88-80.
As a team, Northridge was consistent as the Matadors followed up a first-round 306 with a 307 on Tuesday to finish at +37, 613. Northridge was just ine shot behind fourth-place Eastern Washington (305-307--612) and 10 shot behind co-second place teams Hawai'i (301-302--603)and East Tennessee State (302-301--603). UC Irvine claimed the team title as the Anteaters posted a tournament best 17-over 593.
"I couldn't be happier for the team," said head coach Bonnie Murphy. "It's been a long time coming - this is our best finish in three years."
"I've been saying this is my best team ever, I think the team is finally starting to believe it themselves," added Murphy. "Our team chemistry is unbelievable - the energy on the team is contagious. I'm especially proud of Krystina Gillenwater, she's worked very hard at every aspect of her game. I haven't been this excited about a player since Beth Allen."
