Cal State Northridge women's golf carded a final round 309 to move from fifth to a third-place finish at the Big West Golf Championship at Tijeras Creek G.C.
The Matadors finished with rounds of 327-302-309 for a three-round team score of 938. UC Irvine claimed the team championship with a team score of 908 followed by UC Davis (915), Northridge, Cal Poly (941), Long Beach State (942) and UC Riverside (947).
The Matadors' third-place finish is the best by a Northridge team since 2004 when the Matadors won their second consecutive conference championship. Northridge finished fifth in 2005 and fourth in both 2006 and 2007.
A disastrous opening-round left the Matadors battling to finish among the top five teams. After shooting five rounds in the 80's in the first round, Northridge posted nine scores in the 70's over the final two rounds.
"I'm really proud of the girls and the way they played the final two rounds," said head coach Bonnie Murphy. "It's unfortunate we shot 327 in the first round, that kind of took us out of the running for the championship."
Senior Lucy Davies was the highest Matador finisher as she finished the tournament in a tie for 11th-place at +18, 234. Davies wound up with rounds of 83-74-77 to narrowly miss cracking the top-10.
Juniors Stephanie Aston and Krystina Gillenwater along with freshman Ashlee Nagamine all tied for 15th-place at +21, 237. Aston closed with a round of 76 on Tuesday after scores of 82-79 on Monday. Gillenwater, who was tied for ninth after two rounds, struggled to a final round 84 on Tuesday. Nagamine posted her second straight 78 on Tueday after a first round 81 on Monday morning.
Eva Yoe wrapped up a disappointing championship with a second consecutive round of 78 which left her 23rd at +27, 243. Yoe never could recover from her opening-round 87 which left the Matadors leading scorer battling to make up strokes.
"We finished ahead of our seed (fourth)," added Murphy. "So we've got a lot to be proud of."
