Cal State Northridge passed two teams on the scoreboard following Tuesday's final round but could not overcome a blistering 295 by Cal Poly as the Mustangs claimed the 2008 Matador Spring Invitational at Tierra Rejada Golf Club on Tuesday.
On a day when scores improved dramatically, Cal Poly (607) carded a team round of 295 to back up Monday's round of 312. The Matadors followed up a 314 on Monday with a solid 300 on Tuesday to finish at 614. Northridge slipped by UC Riverside (312-309--621) which took third and Portland (310-314--624), the first round team leader, which slipped to fourth. Cal Baptist (329-309) posted a 20-stroke improvement over Monday's round to claim fifth at 638.
Cal Poly's Hannah Brabb claimed individual medalist honors after carding a tournament-low, two-under 70 on Tuesday to finish three shots ahead of UC Riverside's Jennifer Bermingham. Brabb finished with rounds of 75-70 to finish the tournament at one-over-par 145. Bermingham followed up Monday's 75 with a one-over 73 on Tuesday to finish at four-over-par 148.
Northirdge senior Eva Yoe tied for third with Portland's Taryn Kuida at +5, 149. Yoe posted a three-stroke improvement on Tuesday with a one-over 73 after Monday's round of 76.
Also for the Matadors, Lucy Davies and Stephanie Aston finished in a tie for fifth at +6, 150. Davies, playing for the Northridge "A" team finished Tuesday at one-over 73 after Monday's 77. Aston, playing for the "B" squad, posted a 76 on Monday and a two-over 74 on Tuesday.
Freshman Ashlee Nagamine also had a solid round of one-over 73 on Tuesday to finish the tournament in seventh-place at +8, 152. Krystina Gillenwater's 33rd-place finish and Katrina Sutton's 42nd-place finish rounded out the scoring for the "A" squad. Gillenwater finished with rounds of 85-81 for a two-round +22, 166 while Sutton posted rounds of 82-87 to finish at +25, 169.
For the "B" team, Julie Cho placed 33rd at +22, 166 after rounds of 82-84, Monique Huijsman finished 41st at +24, 168 after rounds of 85-83, Sarah Windsor finished 53rd at +30, 174 after posting back-to-back rounds of 87 and Maurissa Medina finished tied for 54th at +31, 175 after rounds of 88-87.
Cal State Northridge returns to action at the Big West Championship which takes place Apr. 21-22 at Tijeras Creek G.C. in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.
