NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Cal State Northridge placed 10 student-athletes on the Big West 2008-09 Academic All-Conference Winter Sports Team, the league office announced Tuesday. The Matador women's swimming team had eight members selected to the squad, while CSUN women's basketball added two players.
For head coach Barry Schreifels and the Matador swimmers, the eight recognized by the conference were June Enich, Deborah Hefter, Kathryn Kerr, Simone Luker, Katlin Phillips, Emily Rogers, Bethany Scamara and Olesya Senicheva.
For the Staci Schulz and the Matador women's basketball program, Whitney Ligon and Bianca Davies earned the honor.
At the 2009 Big West Championships, Luker recorded some of the top times in school history in the 400 IM and 200 breaststroke and Senicheva set school records in the 100 and 200 butterfly and 200 IM. Scamara also turned in a personal-best time in the 400 IM at the event, while Hefter and Kerr posted new personal-bests in the 50 freestyle.
On the hardwood, Ligon led the Matadors in scoring at 11.1 points and finished with 39 3-pointers this season to finish with 84 in her career. Davies appeared in all 31 games for Northridge and averaged 2.2 points and 1.2 rebounds.
To qualify for the Academic All-Conference Winter Sports Team, the student-athletes must maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA, have attained sophomore standing academically and competed in at least 50 percent of their team's contests. In all, the Big West recognized 92 student-athletes from its nine member institutions.
