Cal State Northridge Named As Site for 2008 NCAA Track & Field Regionals
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - There is no doubt that Cal State Northridge is a haven for outstanding track & field in the Western United States.
Since 1999, Cal State Northridge has hosted three Big West Track & Field Championships (2003, 2006, 2007) and one Big Sky Championship (1999), and in 2004, hosted the prestigious NCAA Regionals.
“With the success we have enjoyed with our outstanding facility, and the perfect weather conditions during late May, the NCAA has been excited about the school’s participation and our ability to make this a great event for the student-athletes, the coaches and the fans of track & field,” said head coach Don Strametz.
The NCAA has announced that Cal State Northridge will host the 2008 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field West Regional on May 30-31, at the Matador Track & Field Complex. Cal State Northridge will also host the 2008 Big West Championships two weeks earlier.
Student-athletes and teams from the Western United States will converge on Cal State Northridge in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Track & Field Championships (June 11-14, 2008) which will be held at Drake University in Des Moines, Ia.
Three other regional sites have been selected including the University of Arkansas (Mid-East Region) and the University of Nebraska (Midwest Region).
The top three finishers in each event at the NCAA Regional qualify for the NCAA Championships. Last year, seven Matador student-athletes earned berths to the NCAA Championships with top three finishes at the Regionals. The list included Deanna Goodwin, who became the first CSUN student-athlete to win an NCAA Regional event with a victory in the 400 meters.
