Matadors Drop 2-1 Decision to UC Davis
Box Score

Northridge, Calif. – UC Davis (10-4-3, 5-3-1) scored 11 seconds in on Sunday afternoon to kick start what would become a 2-1 victory over Cal State Northridge (5-5-6, 1-3-4) at Matador Soccer Field. Ian Conklin assisted two Nicholas Lind scoring efforts in the first half, and a Camilo Rojas score in the second half was not enough for the Matadors.

UC Davis turned the opening kick off into a quick attack which ultimately finished 11 seconds after it started with Lind finishing on a nice Conklin feed with a header to Matador keeper Kevin Guppy’s left side. 15 minutes later, the duo was at it again, and this time, Lind took a beautiful Conklin cross and put it home to Guppy’s right, giving the Aggies a quick two-goal lead.

Northridge quickly went on the attack after the second goal, sending in two near-misses within five minutes of the second Aggie goal. IN the 18th minute, Sunghyun Kim sent in a cross and Devin Deldo got his head on it put sent it off the post. In the 19th minute, it was Deldo putting the ball in, this time with Sean Franklin attempting the one-timer. Again, his attempt found iron.

The halftime whistle sounded with the Aggies still clinging to their two-goal lead.

Northridge continued its frantic pace out of the locker room. Just a minute and a half into the second period, Fergie Agwu was called upon for a throw in. His strong throw was right on the money and caught Camilo Rojas’ head, and Rojas put it home for a Northridge score. The goal was the second of the season for Rojas, who was making his first start.

The Aggies had an opportunity to increase their margin with a penalty kick. Sule Anibaba lined it up, but a lunging Guppy made the save. It was the second failed penalty kick of the week for Northridge opponents.

Despite the effort, the final minutes ticked off with no change in the score. The Matadors fell 2-1.

Northridge returns to the pitch Wednesday evening when they travel to Cal Poly for the second half of their season series with the Mustangs. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m., and if you can’t make it to San Luis Obispo be sure to log on to GoMatadors.com and click the Listen Live! icon to hear former Matador Scott Stark on the call.
