TEMPE, Ariz. - Cal State Northridge opened its final tournament before the Big West Championships with a first round 297 and the Matadors sit in 14th-place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at ASU's Karsten Golf Course.

Despite not playing their best golf, the Matadors (+13, 297) are just five shots out of the top 10 with 36 holes yet to be played (18 on both Saturday and Sunday).

"We're going to try and regroup tomorrow," said Matador head coach Jim Bracken. "We're confident that we can play much, much better."

Juniors Chris Satterlee and Erik Jarvey each had the best Northridge round on Friday as each posted a one-over-par 72 to tie for 28th-place. Freshman Nick Delio is in a tie for 57th at five-over-par 76, junior Clint Oleson is tied for 66th-place after a first round six-over 77 and senior Kyle Nicolson is in 84th-place after an opening-round nine-over 80.

Senior Aaron Hobbs is competing as an individual and is tied for 74th at seven-over-par 78.

"The guys certainly aren't happy with the way we played today, but we're going to try and move up the board as far as we can over the next two days," added Bracken.

Host Arizona State has its two squads at the top of the team leaderboard at -5, 279 after Monday's first round. Colorado State is one shot back in third at -4, 280 while Denver (+1, 285) is six strokes off the lead.

ASU's Braxton Marquez and New Mexico's Kyle Nielsen each carded an opening-round, five-under-par 66 to hold a two-shot lead heading into round two on Saturday.
