NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Now that the start of the 2009 academic year is less than a month away, staff members Nick Bocanegra, Lauren Olivas, and Jaclyn Rymer provide the latest information about the performances of your Matadors as they begin to close out their respective summer campaigns in this week's summer baseball/softball report.
Left-Handed Pitcher, USSSA Pride - National Pro Fastpitch
Softball Assistant Coach Fennell provided outstanding relief from the bullpen this week, pitching 5.1 innings and only allowing one run, while striking out four batters. On the season, Fennell has a 1-0 record to go along with a team-leading 1.80 ERA She has allowed only three earned runs in her 11.2 innings this summer and has limited opponents to a meager .214 batting average.
Right-Handed Pitcher, Humboldt Crabs - West Coast League
The Crabs currently hold a record of 37-9. DeBoo continues to lead their pitching staff with an ERA of 0.45, a record of 7-0, and has only allowed two extra base hits in the 40.1 innings pitched.
Middle Infielder, California Mariners - Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association
In the 20 games that DeMarco has played for the California Mariners, he has split his time in the field at second base, third base, and shortstop, compiling a .996 fielding average in the process. At the plate, DeMarco is batting .362 with nine doubles and six triples for the second-place Mariners.
During the previous week, DeMarco helped the Mariners earn two victories as his team now prepares for their upcoming game at Saddleback College (Mission Viejo), this Friday beginning at 4:00 p.m. against the NW Dodgers.
Right-Handed Pitcher, Palm Springs Power - Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association
Longpre appeared in one game this past week pitching a total of three innings to help the Power to an undefeated week.
The right-hander also participated as a member of the Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association All-Star team as his squad defeated the Pacific West League All-Stars 7-0. Longpre pitched one inning, struck out two batters to eradicate a potential Pacific West scoring opportunity, and earned the win.
For the season, Longpre has been a solid pitcher for the Power with a 0.00 era, in 21 games and 30 innings, striking out 33 batters, with only 13 hits and seven walks. He has four saves, the most of all the Power pitchers and he has also accumulated three wins.
Pitcher/First Baseman, San Luis Obispo Blues - Sierra Baseball League
Peterson pitched one inning for the Blues as the team went 2-for-5 over this past week.
For the season Peterson has a 0.00 era with five appearances and six innings pitched. He has one win, walked only five batters, and struck out nine.
Second Baseman, Wareham Gatemen - Cape Cod League
Pineda helped the Gatemen to two victories this week, keeping Wareham in the hunt for a Western Division crown. Pineda went 1-for-3 against the West-leading Bourne Braves on July 21 in a 4-0 loss. Through 32 games, he has 17 hits, 11 runs, nine walks, eight RBI, five doubles, two stolen bases and a .173 batting average. Pineda's five doubles is currently tied for third-best mark on the team. He also is tied for third on the team in runs scored and is fourth in RBI's.
Second Baseman, Sedalia Bombers - M.I.N.K League
On July 14, the Bombers had a two game sweep against Nevada at Liberty Stadium, which left the two teams tied for first in the MINK South Division. On July 16, the Bombers won their double header against the MINK North leader, Chillicothe, which preserved their spot atop the standings. As the week progressed, Nevada lost to Joplin, while the Bombers split their double header with Beatrice to clinch the MINK South Division Championship. Reed finished the regular season third on his team with a .343 batting average, 16 RBI's, and ten stolen bases.
Outfielder, Edenton Steamers - Coastal Plain League
Swanson continues to lead his team with a .325 batting average, 39 hits, and 8 doubles. Due to his successful season, the Coastal Plain League has just announced Billy Swanson to their American All-Star Team.
Shortstop, San Luis Obispo Rattlers - California Collegiate League
Vickers started all four games, two at shortstop and two as the designated hitter, this past week for the Rattlers. Vickers had ten at-bats with one hit, two walks and one run scored. At shortstop Vickers committed zero errors, gained nine assists and five putouts.
For the season Vickers has played a total of 22 games with 21 starts and is hitting .118 with a .256 on-base percentage. He has nine runs and 14 walks, the second most on the team. Defensively, Vickers holds a .961 fielding percentage, with 32 putouts, 42 assists and has only committed three errors all season.
