Feb. 25, 2011

Today's game between the Cal State Northridge Matadors (2-2) and the Valparaiso Crusaders (0-3) has been suspended in the top of the first inning due to rain.

The game, originally scheduled for 2 p.m. this afternoon, was moved up to 1 p.m. in anticipation of bad weather during the day. The game will now be resumed at its point of suspension tomorrow at noon.

The first batter of the game for Valparaiso singled to right field as a light rain fell on Matador Field. Conditions continued to worsen as the inning wore on, and it began to have an effect on the game.

Junior pitcher Carlos Gonzalez, Jr. started the game on the mound for the Matadors and had trouble keeping control of his pitches with the rain and wind. He walked the second batter before getting Valparaiso's Kyle Gaedele to strike out looking.

Gonzalez walked the bases loaded with one out and threw his next pitch over catcher Steven Keller's head, scoring the run from third and advancing the runners to second and third.

After the run scored, the umpires decided to put the game in a rain delay to try to wait out the conditions. The Matadors laid the tarp on the field and lifted it about 20 minutes later, just before a sudden downpour caused the umpires to suspend the game.

Today's game will resume tomorrow at 12 p.m. at the point of suspension. Valparaiso will be batting in the top half of the first inning with runners on second and third and leading 1-0.

Carlos Gonzalez, Jr. was scheduled to make his first Northridge start today.
