Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -

Ridge Carpenter hit a solo home run and Andrew Muren recorded two hits and scored once but it was not enough as the Cal State Northridge Matadors (18-23, 1-9 Big West) lost 9-3 to the UC Davis Aggies (10-25, 4-6 Big West) at Dobbins Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Matadors were caught playing catch up after Aggie catcher Scott Kalush hit a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the first inning to give UC Davis a 4-0 lead.

Northridge was able to cut into the lead in the top of the third inning as TS Reed led off with a single to center field. Carpenter followed by walking and the two each advanced a base on a wild pitch. With runners on second and third, Adam Barry grounded out to the right side to score Reed and close the gap to 4-1.

The Aggies extended their lead to 6-1 in the home half of the fourth inning after the leadoff man was hit by a pitch. The next batter doubled down the left field line to score the run. A sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly eventually scored the runner before the inning was over.

The Matadors responded in the next half-inning with two runs of their own as Carpenter lifted the first pitch he saw with one out well over the left field fence for a solo home run. Barry walked and advanced to second on a single by Muren, but was picked off shortly after for the second out of the inning. Steven Keller was then hit by a pitch and Marty Bowen singled to right field to score Muren and trim the lead to 6-3.

The three-run margin did not last long as UC Davis pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kalush (3-for-4, six RBI) doubled home a run and later scored on a single, both with two outs.

The final run of the game for the Aggies scored in the bottom of the seventh on yet another Kalush two-out RBI.

Matador starter Ryan Juarez (3-6) pitched 4.0 innings and allowed seven runs in the loss. Carpenter’s home run was his third of the season, tying him with Muren and Tommy Simis for the most on the team.

With his single to open up the seventh inning, Barry (1-for-4) extended his conference-high hitting streak to 15 games.

The Matadors and Aggies will continue their Big West Conference series with an afternoon game on Saturday, Apr. 30. The finale is scheduled for Sunday, May 1. Both games have an approximate start time of 1 p.m.

Tommy Simis went 2-for-4 in Friday's loss at UC Davis.
