Box Score

IRVINE, Calif. -

Early runs were the factor on Sunday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark, as the Cal State Northridge Matadors (14-14, 0-3 Big West) allowed seven runs through the first three innings in an 8-5 loss to Big West rival UC Irvine (18-6, 3-0 Big West).

The Anteaters were the first to strike as they brought around two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead after the leadoff hitter reached base on a fielding error.

A Kyle Attl walk with one out in the top of the third inning broke up the perfect game of UCI’s Matt Whitehouse, as Attl was the first runner aboard for Northridge. Senior TS Reed followed by recording the first Matador hit of the game with a hard single through the left side of the infield. Ridge Carpenter reached safely on a fielder’s choice, advancing Attl to third with two out in the third.

With Tommy Simis batting, Attl scored and Carpenter advanced to second on a wild pitch from relief pitcher Andy Lines, who replaced injured starter Matt Whitehouse. Another wild pitch moved Carpenter to third and Simis ended up walking.

Still in the third, Northridge designated hitter Steven Keller smacked a double to the left center field wall to score two runs and give the Matadors a 3-2 lead after two and a half innings.

UC Irvine answered with five runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead at 7-3. In the top of the fourth, Joshua Goossen-Brown led off with a walk and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by Andrew Muren. A sacrifice fly by Attl scored Goossen-Brown to cut the deficit to 7-4.

The Anteaters had bases loaded in the home half of the fourth inning before relief pitcher Vincent Roberts induced an infield fly and struckout a batter looking to end the inning without surrendering a run.

The final run for Irvine scored on a solo homerun with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Drew Muren tripled down the right field line with one out on a ball that rolled into the Matador bullpen and scored on a pinch-hit double by Adam Barry, but the Matadors were unable to put across any more runs and fell by final score of 8-5.

Keller finished the game 1-for-4 with two RBI, Drew Muren went 2-for-4 with a double and triple and Attl hit 0-for-1 but had a walk, sacrifice fly, run scored and RBI. Starting pitcher Alex Muren (2-1) allowed five earned runs in 2.0-plus innings for his first loss of the year.

The Matadors dropped to 0-3 in conference play with the loss and have lost four in a row for the first time all season. The next CSUN game will be on Tuesday, April 5 on the road at UNLV. Northridge defeated the Rebels at Matador field earlier this year 11-6 and will look to claim a season sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

Junior Steven Keller went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Sunday's loss to Irvine.
