NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge (16-8, 0-1 BWC) dropped their Big West Conference opener in a 16-2 decision to UC Irvine (15-8, 1-0 BWC) Thursday afternoon at Matador Field.
Four different Matadors had hits on the afternoon, including Dominic D'Anna, whose seventh-inning single through the right side of the infield extended his current hit streak to 17 games.
Thanks to back-to-back three-run innings in the third and fourth, UCI was able to take an early 6-0 lead on the Matadors.
Northridge looked poised to make a comeback in the sixth, as Dominic Piazza and TS Reed led off the inning with singles to give the Matadors runners of first and second with no outs.
However, the Anteaters would record three straight outs to get themselves out of the jam and keep their lead at six.
The seventh inning would have a similar start for Northridge, as a D'Anna single to lead off the inning was immediately followed by a Justin DeMarco double down the left-field line. A C.J. Belanger grounder to second shortly thereafter would move DeMarco to third and drive home D'Anna, making the score 6-1 Anteaters.
On the very next pitch, Brad Decater drove a fly ball to center field that allowed DeMarco to tag and score, bringing the Matadors within four.
However, that was as close as Northridge would get.
UCI would go on to score ten runs over the next two innings, putting the game out of reach for CSUN.
Senior Billy Swanson made just the second appearance of his career on the mound for Northridge, finishing off the Anteater line-up in the top of the ninth inning.
CSUN returns to action tomorrow afternoon at Matador Field when they take on UC Irvine in the second game of their three-game series. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
