The Week Ahead ...
Gary Victor celebrates his 39th birthday with a tennis victory ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, offers his weekly insights on the accomplishments of the teams, coaches, and student-athletes who compete for Cal State Northridge.

Tennis Triumph ...
Gary Victor, the highly respected coach of the Cal State Northridge women's tennis team, turns 39-years-old this week, and he recently gave himself a birthday gift by teaming with Zbynek Mlynarik to win the doubles championship at the 2008 United States Professional Tennis Association International Championship at the La Quinta Resort Club in Southern California ... Victor and Mlynarik were unseeded in the tournament, but defeated the #2 seeded team in the semi-finals (6-1, 7-5) and the top-seeded team of Marcin Rozpedski and Andrew Scorteanu in the championship match (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) ... Mlynarik, a volunteer tennis coach at CSUN, also won the singles title (7-5, 7-6) ... The victory by Victor and Mlynarik in the championship match was over a team with outstanding credentials ... Rozpedski is the traveling hitting partner for the world's #1 ranked women's tennis player, Ana Ivanovic ... Rozpedski was also a former standout tennis player at UCLA and a Davis Cup player from Poland ... Scorteanu is a former standout player at Fresno State ... Victor says the victory was especially satisfying in that despite his age (39), he and Mlynarik, won the doubles title against much younger players ... Victor will be entering his 12th season as head coach of the Matador women's tennis program this year ... During the past three seasons, under Victor's direction, the Matadors have chalked up a 41-22 record and have been nationally-ranked ... Victor certainly has the credentials to play the game of tennis ... During his collegiate playing days, Victor was a four-year starter at Rutgers University in New Jersey, playing at the #1 singles position ... Mlynarik is no slouch when it comes to playing the game of tennis ... Mlynarik was a touring pro player for ten years ... Mlynarik holds wins over Marcos Baghdatis (Australian Open finalist in 2006) and American Sam Querrey (Querrey made it to the round of 16 at the U.S. Open, before losing to Rafael Nadal) ... Congratulations to Gary and Zbynek on a great win !!!
