Sept. 5, 2008

Northridge, Calif. - The 2008-09 academic year has officially started at Cal State Northridge, and more than 300 Matador student-athletes (dressed in predominantly red team gear) attended a athletic department celebration (Sept. 4) at The Matadome to kickoff the school year, and wish everybody a productive season both on the playing field and in the classroom.

The two-hour athletic department event allowed all 20 teams to have a chance to say hello to each other, renew friendships and establish new friends among a strong class of incoming freshman student-athletes. The festivities included the Matador cheerleaders, Matty the Matador, and members of the Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC). Amanda Pitzenberger (softball) and Devin Sloan (water polo) will serve as co-president's of SAAC this year.

Plenty of food and refreshments were provided.

After the meet and greet, a large number of student-athletes walked over to the second annual Freshman Convocation at Oviatt Library to welcome the incoming freshman class. The student-athletes handed out Matador lanyards that included a Red Rally update.

"The campus community loves to see the student-athletes out in force and you were an awesome force in your sea of Matador Red," Janet Pinneau, a senior associate athletic director at CSUN, told the large student-athlete turnout.

University president Dr. Jolene Koester greeted the freshman class, and offered the freshman class words of encouragement as they began another chapter in their lives. This year's freshman class numbers around 4,500 students.

"... Cal State Northridge takes great pride that such a large number of students have chosen to study here," said Dr. Koester. "For most, Cal State Northridge was their first and only choice. Their trust in us is a responsibility, challenge and opportunity that everyone at Cal State Northridge takes seriously. With the start of classes, yesterday's Freshman Convocation, and the welcome back picnic last week, the new academic year is off to an exciting start."

The day's activities also included the singing of CSUN's alma mater.
