NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge Athletics Department recently received a grant from the NCAA in an effort to bolster the academic support Matador student-athletes receive. The money, which is in excess of $30,000, is slated to help academic support hire additional staff, including tutors, mentors and other personnel.

"Receiving this award from the NCAA is a great benefit to our academic support efforts. Hiring additional tutors and mentors, as well as an additional graduate assistant, will increase the services we can provide to all our student-athletes," Janet Pinneau, Associate Athletics Director of Academic Services, said. "As a result of the support of the NCAA grants and the tremendous efforts of the Office of Academic Support for Student-Athletes we continue to raise our graduation rates and Academic Progress Rates across all programs."

In addition to the hiring of new tutors and mentors for the over 500 student-athletes currently enrolled at CSUN, the money will provide for the hiring of two graduate assistants who will work with the Academic Support staff. These GA's will serve as teaching assistants in University 101 classes and additionally serve as mentors to those student-athletes in the courses.

"We are very excited about adding to our staff and increasing our abilities to effectively help student-athletes with their academic progress," Brett Sanders, an academic support specialist, added. "This money will go a long way towards helping current and future Matadors achieve academic success."

Cal State Northridge sponsors 20 Division I athletic programs and over 500 student-athletes during the upcoming 2009-10 academic calendar. Last year, baseball junior Ryan Pineda and softball junior Jaclyn Rymer received Big West Scholar Athlete of the Year honors and seven CSUN student-athletes gained Academic All-American honors. Seventy-four student-athletes gained recognition for their outstanding work in the classroom by the Big West Conference, the Mountain Pacific Sports (MPSF) and Cal State Northridge.
