Irvine, Calif. - A total of 33 Cal State Northridge student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Big West Spring Sports Team, the league office announced Tuesday. The Big West Co-Champion women's water polo team led all Matador teams with 10 appointments to the squad while the five-time defending Big West Champion women's track and field team earned nine spots.

To qualify for the Academic All-Big West Spring Sports Team, a student-athlete must meet three criteria. First, they must appear in at least 50 percent of their team's contests. Second, they must have spent at least one full year at the university prior to their season and third is that they maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA.

For the women's water polo team, the ten appointments capped off another championship season in the pool. Representing head coach Marcelo Leonardi and the Matadors were seniors Renee Gargiulo, Kirra Kylander, Kristin McLaughlin, Alison Pierce and 2010 Big West Player of the Year, Jillian Stapf. Also earning the distinction were juniors Jessica Goforth and Bethany Scamara and sophomores Alyssa Goldie, Katie Outzen and Heidi Pettinger.

In helping head coach Don Strametz and the Matadors earn their fifth-straight Big West Track title, nine Matadors earned academic honors. Leading the way were seniors Marissa Crook, Megan Hill, Haylee Varner and Sharon Wilkinson. They were joined by juniors Zitalic Ley and Lilyana Morejon and sophomores Brittany Hamilton, Jenna Hulion and Brittany Salvador.

A third Matador championship team from the 2010 spring season, the CSUN softball squad, placed five members on the academic team. Juniors Krystal Raphael and Karla Chaparro joined Seniors Jaclyn Rymer, Christina Saenz and Alexandria Alvarado as members of the Academic All-Big West Spring Sports Team.

Both the women's golf and women's tennis team placed one student-athlete on the team. Representing Bonnie Murphy and the women's golf team was sophomore Kendall Patten. Earning a spot for Gary Victor and women's tennis was junior Whitney Paluch, who graduated a year early with a degree in psychology in 2010.

On the men's side, the men's track and field team, the 2010 Big West Champions and winners of four of the last six league titles placed three members on the team. Senior Bradley Ike, the league's individual champion in the 100 meter dash, joined sophomores Ed Garcia and Masis Haigobian on the team.

On the links, junior Nick Delio capped off an extraordinary season with a place on the team. A Ping All-American Honorable Mention and individual medalist at the NCAA Regionals, Delio earned a spot for his work in sociology in the classroom.

Finally, the CSUN baseball team saw three of its members named to the team. Graduating seniors Billy Ott and Bryan Longpre joined junior TS Reed on the team. Longpre (Finance) and Ott (Political Science) graduated in the spring of 2010 with honors and helped lead the Matadors to a 29-27 record.
