The Week Ahead ... Katie Holloway sets sail for Egypt ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, offers his weekly insights on the accomplishments of the teams, coaches, and student-athletes who compete for CSUN.

Matador Minute ...
Matador basketball senior standout Katie Holloway will soon be traveling to Egypt to compete with the United States Women's Sitting Volleyball team to compete in several matches against other top world teams at the World Organization for the Disabled Intercontinental Cup ... Holloway has been a member of the United States team the past two years, and is planning to move to Oklahoma at the end of the school year to train fulltime with the USA team at the University of Central Oklahoma ... The Americans are ranked fifth in the world and have qualified for the Paralympics in Beijing, China, Sept. 6-17 ... Beijing will mark the U.S. Sitting Women's Team's second appearance in the Paralympics ... The United States won the bronze medal at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece ... Holloway recently received a 2008 Giant Step Award by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) ... A four-year letter winner on the women's basketball team, Holloway has been recognized numerous times as a courageous student-athlete ... During her senior season (2007-08), Holloway posted career bests in points (14.5 ppg), rebounds (7.2 rpg) and field goal pct. (.554, #1 in the Big West) ... Holloway (who will graduate this spring with a degree in Sociology), has excelled in the classroom, and has actively participated in numerous CSUN and community activities ... Holloway has been named to the Academic All-Big West team three times, has served as a peer mentor and participated in the NCAA Leadership Council (2007) ... What makes Holloway's story so courageous is the fact she was born without a fibula in her right leg, and when she was 20 months old her right foot and ankle were amputated ... Most people are unaware of the circumstances surrounding Holloway, which is the way she likes it ... Holloway truly represents the meaning of "student-athlete".

Tennis Talk ...
Congratulations to Matador women's tennis head coach Gary Victor, whose team enjoyed another winning season (14-8 overall, 7-3 Big West opponents) in 2008 and were again nationally-ranked ... The future of the women's tennis team looks strong ... This year, freshmen Brooke Doane and Nina Jaworowski combined for a 24-8 record in singles play while junior Sandra Kukla produced 13 wins in 17 matches.

Polo Potpourri ...
Although the Matador's women's water polo team did not finish the 2008 season with a winning record, the future looks bright ... Six of the team's top eight scorers return in 2009, and Jillian Stapf returns as one of the nation's best goalkeepers ... Stapf is #2 all-time in saves (635) and will mostly certainly break the school record for saves currently held by Garziella Caredda (763 saves, 2003-06) ... The water polo team ended the year with four victories in their final five games.

Basketball Bits ...
Stan Johnson, an assistant men's basketball coach at CSUN, has taken a similar position at the University of Utah ... This is a good move for Johnson who returns to his hometown (Salt Lake City) ... Johnson is a Southern Utah graduate.
