The Week Ahead ...

Hoops Hysteria ...
Not only was there another near sellout crowd at last Saturdayís basketball game between Cal State Northridge and Rider, 18
professional scouts from 12 NBA teams were there to scout Riderís 6-foot-11, 250-pound center Jason Thompson ... The NBA scouts included Mitch Kupchak of the Los Angeles Lakers and Steve Kerr of the Phoenix Suns ... Thompson, a candidate for the prestigous John Wooden Award, offered a workmanlike eleven points and 13 rebounds in 30 minutes of play ... It was a tough assignment to handle the projected high first round NBA selection ... Two Matador players fouled out leaving sophomore walkon Tony Osunsanmi the task of guarding one of the nationís top collegiate centers ... The task was challenging but not intimidating for Osunsanmi ... The likeable sophomore responded with six rebounds in 13 minutes of play despite being seven inches shorter than Thompson, and being outweighed by 60 pounds ... A nationwide television audience on ESPNU witnessed the Matadors tough 73-72 loss to the Broncs ... Even Dennis Farrell, the commissioner of the Big West Conference, a high ranking official from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and Cal State Northridge President Dr. Jolene Koester attended the game which was witnessed by nearly 1,400 fans ... The question was asked several times during the game ... Where is Rider University? ... Rider (4,600 undergraduates) is located in Lawrenceville, NJ, (60 miles south of New York City; 30 miles north of Philadelphia) ... Its most notable graduates include former Notre Dame basketball coach and ESPN analyst Digger Phelps, and Clair Bee ... Who is Clair Bee? ... Bee developed the three-second rule and the shot clock.

Sport Shorts ...
Softball junior Amanda Peek is off to a ferocious start for the Matadors ... The catcher is hitting .476 with seven extra-base hits and nine RBIs ... At last weekend's Houston Marriott Classic, Peek hit .500 for the second-straight weekend, also reaching the mark at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas two weeks ago ... Peek is a two-time All-Big West First Team honoree and was the Big West Conference's Freshman Player of the Year in 2006 ... Junior basketball forward Crystal Hahs has been a menace to opposing players daring to venture into the paint this season ... Hahs has 62 blocks this season, an average of 2.7 per contest ... The average ranks 13th in all of Division I women's basketball ... Hahs has blocked at least five shots in four different times and is the school record holder with 122 in her career.
