Northridge, Calif. - A standing-room only crowd of nearly 1,800 Matador fans not only witnessed an exciting men's basketball game between first place Long Beach State and second place Cal State Northridge last Saturday night, but they also had a chance to honor more than 200 members of the CSUN Hall of Fame.
Northridge fans gave the many Hall of Famers who attended the "Matadors Reunion of Champions" a loud round of applause when they were announced and escorted to center court during halftime of the men's basketball game.
The list of honorees included Doug Billingsley (football), Steve Brody (track & field), Mark Cooley (basketball), Patricia De La Riva (basketball), Michele Hampton (swimming), Mike Kane (football), Jacqueline Hansen (track & field), Mike Jacobs (football), Bruce Lemmerman (football), Bob Lopresti (baseball), Scia Maumausolo (softball), Doug McKenzie (baseball), Jerry Peters (football), Rosemarie Finnigan Rahn (volleyball), George Robnett, Joel Schaeffer (football) and Sam Winningham (football).
Every other year, Cal State Northridge will have a "Matadors Reunion of Champions" honoring the Hall of Fame members who have distinguished themselves on the playing field.
The festivity of events on Saturday included a Hall of Fame Reunion reception. The reception offered a chance for the Hall of Famers to renew old friendships and to meet other members of the Hall of Fame from other sports.
The Hall of Famers who attended also got a chance to watch both the men's and women's basketball teams compete at The Matadome. The Cal State Northridge women beat Cal State Fullerton, 71-65, while the Matador men played a strong game until near the end when Long Beach State recorded a 79-62 decision.
Many of the Hall of Famers also were introduced at halftime of the Matador women's basketball game.
In the alternating years, Cal State Northridge will have its Hall of Fame banquet to induct new members to the Matador Hall of Fame.
"There is a great tradition of Matador Athletics and this event was a great opportunity to bring back a great group of men and women who proudly wore the colors of Cal State Northridge - Red & Black," said Tom Ford, Associate Athletic Director (External Relations) and event organizer.
